2017 Portolan Founder's Collection
The 2017 Portolan is a wine full of vigor and intense flavors. Brooding notes of roasted coffee beans and dark chocolates jump out, accompanied by boysenberry and dark plum. Vanilla and raspberry burst on the palate as the vibrant phenolic structure of the Syrah opens up. This combination of fruit and oak creates a symphony of flavor and well balanced tannins that will invite you back for more.
This vintage is sold out.
Winemaker Notes
The 2017 Syrah off of our RBZ Vineyard in the El Pomar sub AVA of Paso Robles needed no one to accompany it to bottle. Paso's patented hot days and cool nights were in full swing in 2017, allowing the Syrah to develop slowly towards its peak ripeness while maintaining its acidity. Once it arrived at the winery, we gently destemmed the fruit to tank where it went through primary fermentation. After being pressed, we barreled down to a mix of new and used French oak where it underwent secondary fermentation. The final blend is comprised of 68% new French oak, barrel aged for 20 months and bottle aged for nearly a year to allow the wine to redevelop in bottle before being poured in your glass!
