The 2020 Sextant Portolan is a showcase for Syrah’s virtues—bright raspberries for drive, dark figs for depth, and boysenberries for modulation. The touch of Viognier is not just an homage to a Northern Rhône tradition but a brilliant move to gain lift and fragrance. Honeysuckle and peach notes complement the flavorful tableau towards a lengthy finish. Graced with ample acidity and limber tannins, cellaring for a decade will yield even more refined contours.

Winemaker Notes
Portolan is our crème de la crème. In true Côte-Rôtie fashion, we conferment about 7% Viognier with our prized Block 7 Syrah, all grown within our estate vineyard in the El Pomar District in southeast Paso. The small portion of Viognier helps bind color during fermentation and adds a floral tone we don't get from Syrah on its own. We age the conferment in French and Hungarian oak for 20 months, then we blend back a portion of 100% Syrah to the cofermented lot to find the perfect balance of bold structure with a velvety finish.
